The Rare One’s of New Orleans thank Jim – KC5IOA and Steve – KD9GRL for becoming an Associate Member of the Rare One’s of New Orleans. Jim is from Carencro, Louisiana and Steve recently moved to Mobile, Alabama. Steve can now enjoy Mardi Gras in Mobile! Of course, Jim being close to Lafayette, Louisiana is a good source of all things Cajun! Congratulations once again to Jim and Steve…
It seems Carl, WW5CR, has been inspired to create a little bit of Hawaii in Enterprise, MS. Here’s some pictures of Carl’s Tiki Bar Project at his QTH. If you happen to hear about a crazy Mississippian, “Hanging Five” in his swimming pool, you can count on it probably being Carl! In any case, here’s some pictures of Carl’s Handiwork…..
On a recent family vacation to Tennessee, I was able to meet up with Paul, KY4BF and his lovely wife, Sandy. We ate at one of Paul’s Favorite Cajun Restaurants in Tennessee – Paw Paw’s Catfish Kitchen. As it turns out, the owner – Chris Buras and I knew several common acquaintances from “Down the Road” in Plaquemines Parish! Paul, Sandy, Christi and I had a wonderful dinner and would recommend it to anyone passing the area. Here’s the web link to the restaurant: https://pawpawscatfishkitchen.com/index.php
Recently, I had the opportunity to try Yaka Mein Soup. Not usually known as a New Orleans favorite even to some locals but was surprised nonetheless! Seafood Gumbo is still my personal favorite, but Yaka Mein is definitely on my go to list now!
Of course, there are numerous recipes on the internet, but included is an article from Wikipedia for some historical references https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaka_mein. Enjoy and let me know if you give it a try….
If you missed the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest, the Rolling Stones performed live. Take a look at the video clip….
The Rare One’s of New Orleans want to thank all who participated at our Annual Christmas Social. All had a great time at Tony Madina’s Restaurant in Gretna. It was especially great to have Big John back after a year of challenging medical set backs. Of course, we always are excited to have two of our Associate Members – W5PDW, John from Magnolia, TX and KY4BF, Paul from Farragut, TN. attend our Christmas Social. The Rare One’s wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, healthy New Year. Please see the enclosed pictures of the event, courtesy of W5PDW…..
From time-to-time, we love to post special events or activities of our Associate Members. Chris, AA1RL participated in the Color Guard Service for Captain Hill whose remains were returned home to Clyde, NC from Vietnam. Captain Hill was missing in Vietnam since 1969. Here are some pictures of the service.
If you happen to travel to New Orleans, there are a plethora of great restaurants to choose from. One of my favorites is Zea’s. Maybe not a famous as Antoine’s or Commander’s Palace, it’s one of the local favorites! If you are tired of the traditional barbecue ribs, give this a try! Here’s the recipe in pdf format: Zea’s Thai Ribs Recipe
